Built-up Roof

A built-up roof (smooth built-up, ballasted built-up, or tar and gravel) is made by laying down several layers of tar and water-resistant materials and then covering them with gravel. A built-up roof generally has a lifespan of 10 to 20 years, depending on weather conditions in the area.

Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), also known as Hypalon®

Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), also known as Hypalon®, is a reinforced membrane based on synthetic rubber. Its thermoplastic nature allows it to be hot air-welded. After it is installed and exposed to the environment, the membrane’s individual polymer components cross-link, resulting in a highly stable synthetic rubber roofing material. Hypalon® is ideal for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings, especially where strong chemical resistance is necessary.

Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM)

Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) is a synthetic rubber that can withstand extreme temperatures and shows no signs of aging. It will not crack, split, or peel, it is completely resistant to environmental pollution, and it is not affected by UV light or ozone. EPDM can elongate to over 300 percent to accommodate temperature cycling and building movement, has a lifespan of about 20 years, and requires almost no maintenance.

Modified Bitumen

Modified bitumen is a flat roofing membrane made from asphalt and plastic or rubber polymers. Modified bitumen has the redundancy of asphalt built-up roofing and the UV resistance and flexibility of a modified membrane. A modified bitumen flat roof generally lasts 10 to 20 years, depending on climate and weathering. An elastomeric coating can be added to increase reflectivity, which can lower cooling bills for your business.

Thermoplastic olefin or polyolefin (TPO)

Thermoplastic olefin or polyolefin (TPO) is a single-ply roof membrane material that is made from ethylene propylene rubber. This durable material resists ozone and algae and is environmentally-friendly and easy to install. TPO is highly resistant to tears, impacts, and punctures and is flexible to allow for building movement. K.P. LaMarco installs commercial flat roofs using top-quality materials from leading manufacturers, such as Carlisle, WeatherBond, CertainTeed & Firestone.
